In September 2013, Lieutenant Eric Blanchard participated in the beating of inmate Derrick Sellers at the Iberia Parish Jail. Blanchard kneed Sellers repeatedly, pepper-sprayed him, and allegedly struck him in the head with a spray can. This assault resulted in severe injuries to Sellers, including a broken cheekbone and long-term cognitive impairments. Sellers received a $2.5 million settlement in 2019.
