On September 24, 2021, Sgt. Eric Huxley was involved in the arrest of Jermaine Vaughn, a homeless Black man, at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. During the arrest, while Vaughn was handcuffed and restrained on the ground, Huxley intentionally kicked him in the face. This act was captured on body camera footage. Huxley was subsequently indicted on federal charges for using excessive force and pleaded guilty in May 2023. In September 2023, he was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, with the first six months under home detention. The incident led to public outcry and a civil lawsuit filed by Vaughn against Huxley, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, and the city of Indianapolis.
