Officer Eric Pratt was involved in the August 12, 2021, traffic stop of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. During this encounter, Pratt allegedly misidentified Laundrie as the victim and ignored visible injuries on Petito’s face. The Petito family filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Moab Police Department, citing Pratt’s failure to follow Utah’s domestic violence laws. Additionally, prior to his tenure in Moab, Pratt served as police chief in Salina, Utah, where he was accused of engaging in extramarital affairs, using government buildings for sexual encounters, and threatening a former partner with violence if she disclosed their relationship. These allegations suggest a pattern of misconduct and abuse of authority.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
