On May 21, 2022, Officer Ethen Hendrix, along with Officer Brandon Rogers, arrested Jeremy Lee Thompson, who was reportedly in medical distress, clutching his chest and mouthing ‘help me.’ Despite Thompson’s claims of having a stroke, the officers arrested him for public intoxication without conducting a field sobriety test. A subsequent toxicology report showed no alcohol in Thompson’s system. The officers took Thompson to the Geneva County Jail’s ‘drunk tank’ instead of a hospital. Approximately two hours later, Thompson was admitted to the ER unresponsive and was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. His family filed a federal lawsuit alleging the officers ignored his serious medical needs, leading to his death. The lawsuit is ongoing.
