In March 2020, during a training exercise, the deputy made a racially insensitive remark, reportedly saying, ‘I hope he was Black,’ or similar words. This led to his placement on the state’s Exculpatory Evidence Schedule (Laurie List) and subsequent termination. The deputy filed a lawsuit in November 2020 to have his name removed from the list, arguing that the findings were incorrect or misinterpreted. The case was scheduled for a bench trial in October 2022.
