In September 2023, Deputy Fred Robert Hale stole three pornographic magazines and a screwdriver from the scene of an unattended death investigation. He attempted to conceal his actions by altering body camera footage. Hale was charged with misdemeanor petty theft and alteration or concealment of evidence. He pleaded guilty, received a sentence of 40 hours of community service, two years of probation, and the theft charge was dropped as part of a plea deal.
