On January 6, 2021, Officer Gabriel Maldonado shot and killed Jacob Macduff, who was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with a knife inside his locked truck. An independent review found that Maldonado had no reason to fear for his life and criticized the department’s handling of the incident. A grand jury declined to indict Maldonado, and he later resigned from the Tigard Police Department. The city settled with Macduff’s family for $3.8 million.
