Deputy Gary Hicks was named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in January 2023 by the estate of Dylan Akers. The lawsuit alleges that Hicks arrested Akers in December 2021 for trespassing following an alleged drug overdose. After being taken to the hospital for evaluation, Akers became combative and was placed in Hicks’ cruiser. Upon arrival at the Christian County Jail, Akers was placed in a four-point restraint chair and left unattended for over two hours, during which he was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. The lawsuit claims negligence by Hicks and other officials led to Akers’ death.
