On February 8, 2016, Officer Geoffrey Freeman fatally shot unarmed 17-year-old David Joseph. Chief Art Acevedo fired Freeman for failing to follow department policy during the incident. Freeman appealed the firing and reached a settlement in December 2016 that awarded him $35,000 and allowed him to work for other police departments.
