In 1987, Sergeant Gerald Rudnick was demoted to corporal after leaving his post as shift commander to operate his personal snow removal business during duty hours. An investigation confirmed that Rudnick neglected his duties by abandoning his assigned responsibilities to conduct private business. The Discipline Review Board recommended demotion, which was upheld by the Civil Service Commission and the North Dakota Supreme Court.
