In 2018, Sgt. Greg Wessels was involved in a lawsuit accusing him of discrimination and excessive force during a confrontation with 17-year-old Khy’La Williams at the DART facility in downtown Des Moines. The case resulted in a $75,000 settlement. That same year, the city paid an $800,000 settlement after a jury found Wessels and Officer Michael Fong used excessive force against Dustin Burnikel in 2013. In 2021, Wessels resigned amid an internal investigation into inappropriate comments made during a union meeting.
