Served as Sheriff of Fayette County from 1974 until his resignation in May 1989. In 1989, pleaded guilty to multiple federal felonies, including racketeering, bribery, and tax evasion, resulting in a 37-month prison sentence and a $25,000 fine. Received a full pardon in 1994 and was appointed as supernumerary sheriff, but was excluded from that office due to his prior convictions. Re-elected as Sheriff in 2002 and served until 2007. Sought supernumerary sheriff’s benefits post-term, but the Alabama Supreme Court ruled he was not entitled to them due to his felony convictions.
