In September 2021, Investigator Dominic West was involved in a fatal vehicle collision on Highway 15, resulting in the death of Janet Wilson. A lawsuit filed in 2022 alleges that West was speeding at least 54 mph in a 40 mph zone and was negligent in Wilson’s death. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office disputed the speeding allegation and claimed that Wilson was intoxicated and negligent. Both parties acknowledged that Wilson stepped into the road, but provided differing accounts of the incident. The lawsuit is ongoing.
