In October 2022, while off duty, Steward was driving a marked Tuscumbia police vehicle under the influence of alcohol at approximately 90 miles per hour. He struck and killed pedestrian Terry Hinton, who was checking his mailbox. Steward was indicted for reckless murder in March 2023 and pleaded guilty to manslaughter on August 13, 2024. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October 2024.
