    Former Sheriff James Lujan was convicted in December 2022 of aiding a felon and intimidating a witness. He assisted former Española City Councilor Phillip Chacon in evading police after a high-speed chase in 2017. Lujan was sentenced to three years in prison followed by a year and a half of probation. He resigned as sheriff shortly after his conviction.
