Deputy James ‘Matt’ Handley was indicted in January 2023 for his role in the excessive force used during Tony Mitchell’s arrest. Handley, along with Deputy Carpenter, allegedly dragged and kicked Mitchell, and slammed him onto a police car. Additionally, Handley was charged with witness tampering for providing false testimony to a grand jury about the incident.
