Former Sheriff Jason Barnes pleaded guilty in December 2021 to providing alcohol to a minor and tampering with a witness. The charges stemmed from incidents in February 2020, where Barnes provided alcohol to a teenager and later attempted to influence a potential witness’s testimony. Barnes resigned from his position in August 2020 due to the case. Additionally, he faced a lawsuit alleging that he and other officers groomed and pressured a high school intern for sex during her internship at the sheriff’s office. The lawsuit was settled in 2021.
