Deputy Jermaine Smith was placed on administrative duty in April 2022 after a complaint regarding a 2020 incident during his tenure with the Holly Hill Police Department. Smith and other officers allegedly conducted an illegal search and detention of a couple in Orangeburg County without a warrant and outside their jurisdiction. The couple reported being handcuffed and detained in their underwear during the early morning hours. The incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
