In late 2022, Sergeant Jesse Chambers was captured on a doorbell camera kicking a dog while responding to a call. The video went viral, leading to public outcry. The Terre Haute Police Merit Board handed Chambers a ten-day unpaid suspension, the maximum punishment allowed by law. Chambers appealed the decision, but on February 16, 2023, the board denied the appeal and upheld the discipline. Additionally, Chambers was required to undergo retraining and an evaluation period with the department. Chief Shawn Keen acknowledged Chambers’ 12 years of service but agreed with the punishment.
