In February 2018, while serving as a New Mexico State Police officer and former Otero County deputy, Jessica Turner was stopped by Otero County Sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of DWI near Alamogordo. Despite failing field sobriety tests and smelling of alcohol, deputies gave her a ride home instead of arresting her. Turner was later charged with DWI and tampering with evidence for allegedly hiding her keys to avoid arrest. She resigned in April 2018 after being notified of potential termination. Turner filed a lawsuit against the state, which she dropped in November 2020. A jury could not reach a verdict on her DWI charge, and a retrial was set for April 2021.
