In 1995, Sheriff Joe Smith was implicated in a lawsuit alleging deliberate indifference to inmate safety. The case, Hale v. Tallapoosa County, involved an inmate who was severely beaten by fellow inmates. The court found that Sheriff Smith’s policies and actions contributed to the unsafe conditions, violating the inmate’s constitutional rights. The judgment was reversed in part, holding Sheriff Smith accountable for the deliberate indifference.
