In July 2018, off-duty Officer John Galman assaulted Jorge Gomez, a Hispanic Iraq War veteran, outside a bar. Galman questioned Gomez’s military service and called him a ‘fake American’ before the attack. He was fired from the NOPD and later pleaded guilty to simple battery.
