KeymasterIn August 2022, then-Captain John Grismore was caught on video kicking a handcuffed and shackled detainee. This led to his termination from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Despite the incident, Grismore was elected sheriff in November 2022. In December 2023, the Vermont Criminal Justice Council revoked his law enforcement certification for violating the state’s use-of-force policy. Additionally, he faced a simple assault charge related to the 2022 incident, resulting in two mistrials as juries failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The Vermont Sheriff’s Association has called for his resignation due to these events.

KeymasterIn August 2022, then-Captain John Grismore was captured on video kicking a handcuffed and shackled detainee twice in the groin. This led to his termination from the department and a charge of simple assault. Despite these events, Grismore was elected sheriff in November 2022. The Vermont Criminal Justice Council found that he violated the state’s use of force policy and voted to permanently revoke his law enforcement certification in December 2023. Two trials in 2024 resulted in mistrials, and the assault charge was eventually dropped. A legislative committee recommended his resignation, but Grismore refused to step down.
