In December 2017, Lieutenant John Long resigned from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) into the alleged misuse of public funds. The investigation focused on questionable purchases from a local Army/Navy store co-owned by Long. Although the solicitor declined to prosecute, Long faced demotion and a significant pay reduction, leading to his resignation. He cited a hostile work environment and alleged that Sheriff Dennis Kelly had targeted him due to his support for the previous sheriff.
