In April 2013, Sheriff John W. Hawkins staged a car accident and submitted a fraudulent insurance claim for $8,262.65. He pleaded guilty to mail fraud in February 2014, resigned from his position, and agreed to never serve as a law enforcement officer again. He was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison.
