On March 11, 2019, Officer John Williams was involved in an incident where he threw 15-year-old Jamelia Barnett to the ground during a confrontation. This action resulted in Barnett dislocating her shoulder and losing consciousness. The city settled a civil rights lawsuit related to this incident for $400,000 in July 2023. Williams remains employed by the Poughkeepsie Police Department.
