In September 2022, Deputy Joseph Allen Nail was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence strangulation after a physical altercation with his wife. Both sustained minor injuries. Nail was held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $15,000 bond. Due to the allegations, the Hale County Sheriff’s Office terminated his employment. In January 2025, the charges were dismissed after the complaining witness declined to appear in court.
