Former Officer Joseph Michael Hand was involved in a fatal car accident on January 10, 2021, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Kenya Reed. Hand’s patrol vehicle collided with Reed’s car while traveling at 95 mph in a 30 mph zone. The Reed family filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Hand and the city in July 2022. Hand was indicted for criminally negligent homicide, but the charge was dismissed due to the statute of limitations. The lawsuit also alleges Hand had a history of reckless operation of police vehicles, including a prior incident in June 2020 where he crashed into a Saraland police officer’s cruiser during a high-speed chase.
