Joseph V. Cuffari, appointed as Inspector General in 2019, has faced multiple allegations of misconduct. He has been accused of delaying and mishandling reports on sexual assault and the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. In 2023, a judge dismissed his lawsuit alleging harassment by an oversight body investigating him. Additionally, Cuffari agreed to a $1.2 million settlement with a former deputy inspector general he had fired, after a third-party investigation found the employee engaged in divisive behavior. Cuffari also admitted to regularly deleting text messages from his government phone, leading to calls for his resignation.
