    Off-duty Officer Justin Ayars violently assaulted his fiancée, Krista Cooper-Nurse, during a May 2018 argument, beating her with a rock and repeatedly punching her. The attack left her with shattered orbital and sinus bones and lasting numbness in her face. Ayars was fired, and in 2019 an arbitrator upheld his termination – a rare instance of a fired SAPD officer not being reinstated.
