On August 8, 2020, Officer Justin McRee was among the officers who fatally shot Jonathan Randell, who was experiencing a mental health crisis. After non-lethal methods were employed, Randell threw a knife toward officers, prompting McRee and others to fire, resulting in over 50 gunshot wounds. The city paid a $2 million settlement to Randell’s estate following a civil rights lawsuit. McRee continues to be employed by the Tulsa Police Department.
