On October 7, 2022, Officer Justin Wooten participated in the arrest of former ECU football player Demarcus Fox. Wooten, along with other officers, is accused of using excessive force, including slamming Fox to the ground, placing a knee on his neck, and repeatedly punching and kneeing him. The lawsuit also alleges that the officers failed to activate their body-worn cameras during the arrest. Fox was charged with Fleeing/Eluding Arrest and Resisting a Public Officer; however, all charges were dropped on January 18, 2023. Fox filed a lawsuit seeking over $1 million in damages.
