On October 7, 2022, Officer Keith Knox was involved in the arrest of former ECU football player Demarcus Fox. Knox allegedly used excessive force by pulling Fox’s dreadlocks with such force that multiple locs were ripped out. The lawsuit claims that Knox and other officers slammed Fox to the ground, placed a knee on his neck, and repeatedly punched and kneed him. Additionally, it is alleged that the officers failed to activate their body-worn cameras during the arrest. Fox was charged with Fleeing/Eluding Arrest and Resisting a Public Officer; however, all charges were dropped on January 18, 2023. Fox filed a lawsuit seeking over $1 million in damages.
