In November 2016, Officer Kevin Jones, while working off-duty at the Lakewood Public Library, confronted a 17-year-old girl for having her feet on a chair. Despite her compliance, Jones escalated the situation, forcibly removing her from the library, during which he pushed her into a book cart and fell on top of her, resulting in a dislocated jaw. The incident led to a lawsuit alleging excessive force and failure to provide medical aid. Jones received a 40-hour unpaid suspension, was referred to the employee assistance program, and was denied permission to work off-duty at the library.
