Former Police Chief Kevin Worlton was charged in 2015 with two second-degree felony counts of making false or inconsistent material statements. The charges stemmed from allegations that he falsified police reports and made false statements under oath during a 2014 drug investigation. Specifically, he was accused of misrepresenting whether he had read a suspect their Miranda rights before obtaining a confession used to secure search warrants and arrests. The case was dismissed in 2018, but the Attorney General’s Office referred the matter to Peace Officers Standards and Training, expressing the desire that Worlton lose his certification as a peace officer permanently. The charges and subsequent dismissal led to the disbanding of the Escalante Police Department, as Worlton was the town’s sole officer at the time.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
