In August 2023, Officer Kiran Kimbrough responded to a minor car crash involving 62-year-old Deacon Johnny Hollman. After Hollman hesitated to sign a traffic citation, a physical confrontation ensued, during which Kimbrough tased Hollman multiple times. Hollman repeatedly stated he couldn’t breathe and subsequently died. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Kimbrough was terminated for violating standard operating procedures by not calling a supervisor before proceeding with the arrest. Hollman’s family filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Kimbrough, the police chief, and the city.
