In August 1991, Sheriff Lester Drake was convicted on 13 of 17 charges, including conspiracy to commit extortion and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. He accepted bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as drug dealers. The extortion charge carries up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, while the drug distribution charge carries penalties of 10 years to life in prison and up to $4 million in fines.
