In December 2019, Lieutenant Lawrence Murphy was accused by inmate Tammy Pennington of using excessive force by applying handcuffs too tightly, leading to injury. Pennington alleged that Murphy refused to loosen the handcuffs despite her complaints. A lawsuit was filed against Murphy and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, but in May 2023, the court granted summary judgment in favor of the defendants, dismissing the case.
