In 1996, Undersheriff Mark Benton sought to have Deputy Lorraine ‘Jade’ McKenzie decertified by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission, expressing a lack of ‘trust’ and ‘confidence’ in her ability to serve as a law enforcement officer. This action was taken despite McKenzie’s ten years of service and her efforts to return to duty after addressing her psychological health issues. The case led to legal proceedings where McKenzie alleged discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
