Court Officer Mark Harris filed a lawsuit in late 2021 against former Sheriff Steve Stephens and the Wood County Commission, alleging emotional distress due to Stephens pressuring him to return to work while Harris was on leave caring for his wife diagnosed with cancer. The lawsuit claimed Stephens’ conduct was ‘atrocious, intolerable, and so extreme and outrageous as to exceed the bounds of decency.’ The case was settled in June 2024; details of the settlement were confidential.
