In November 2021, Officer Mathew Smith, along with two other correctional officers, was involved in an incident where they held down an inmate and shaved off part of his eyebrow. This act led to charges of second-degree unlawful imprisonment and second-degree harassment. Smith was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation and legal proceedings.
