In April 2020, Officer Matthew Blaine Till, a white officer, was involved in a road-rage incident initiated by his wife, leading to the brutal beating of a Black man. Till and Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputy John Nicholas Taccone pursued the victim, and upon stopping him, engaged in a physical struggle, striking his head and face. Till attempted to handcuff the man, used a Taser multiple times, and threatened to kill him. The victim fled but crashed his vehicle shortly after. Till was fired from the Selma Police Department and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in federal court for instructing Taccone not to disclose the initial call from his wife. He was sentenced to five years’ probation and barred from future law enforcement employment.
