In August 2012, Officer Matthew Gorans was involved in the controversial arrest of Eric Ronnell Hightower, during which Gorans allegedly used excessive force, including pepper-spraying Hightower in the ear. Gorans and the St. Paul Police Federation sued the city over the release of squad car video related to the incident.
