In June 2019, Deputy Matthew Shiers was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend at his West Bath home. He was charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence assault, and cruelty to animals. The incident involved Shiers allegedly injuring a dog to provoke the victim. Following an internal investigation, Shiers was fired in December 2019. In April 2021, he agreed to a deal that would dismiss the domestic violence assault charge in 18 months if he complied with certain conditions, including completing a certified batterer’s intervention program.
