On August 17, 2023, Officer Shirley was placed on administrative leave following a physical altercation with Latrivia Lashae Crews during an arrest. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated the incident to determine if proper police procedures were followed. On January 31, 2024, a Bibb County Grand Jury indicted Crews on multiple charges, including Assault 2nd Degree, while determining there was no probable cause to charge Officer Shirley. Consequently, he was reinstated to duty on February 8, 2024.
