In June 2016, Sergeant Michael Mole’ was involved in a hostage negotiation where he allowed a suspect to smoke a marijuana blunt after surrendering. Despite resolving the situation peacefully, Mole’ was terminated in October 2016 for his actions during the incident. He filed a lawsuit against the City of Durham in November 2018, alleging violations of his constitutional rights. The case has progressed through the courts, with the North Carolina Supreme Court agreeing to hear it in March 2025.
