In June 2019, Deputy Nathan Dean fatally shot Logan Johnsrud during a welfare check. Dean fired three shots, one of which killed Johnsrud, another hit Johnsrud’s family member, and the third struck fellow Deputy Cory Leigh. The incident led to a $2.35 million settlement in a federal lawsuit alleging excessive force. The Wood County District Attorney’s Office determined there was no basis to file criminal charges against Dean.
