In December 2021, Officer Nathan Ronan was involved in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Quadry Sanders, an unarmed Black man, during an investigation into reports of a man waving a gun inside a home. Body camera footage showed Sanders appearing from around a refrigerator with his hands visible, holding a ball cap. Ronan fired four times at Sanders. He was charged with first-degree manslaughter and subsequently fired. In June 2023, an arbitrator ordered his reinstatement, a decision the city is considering appealing. Sanders’ mother has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Ronan and the city.
