In 2007, Nicholas ‘Nick’ Dondero was convicted of battery domestic violence after pleading no contest. He was fined $1,000, served two days of house arrest, completed 48 hours of community service, and underwent counseling. Despite this conviction, Dondero was elected as Esmeralda County Sheriff in November 2022. In October 2023, the Nevada Attorney General’s Office filed a lawsuit seeking his removal, citing his ineligibility to serve due to the prior conviction. However, in January 2024, a judge denied the motion to remove him from office, allowing him to continue serving as sheriff.
