In March 2013, Sheriff Nick Finch intervened in the arrest of a man for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Finch ordered the release of the individual, destroyed or removed official arrest documents, and altered the arrest log to make it appear the arrest never occurred. He was arrested in June 2013 and charged with official misconduct, a third-degree felony. Finch argued his actions were in defense of the Second Amendment. His trial began in October 2013, and he faced potential removal from office if convicted.
